Robert is a former Zen Buddhist monk, is a writer and the director of the Dorset Mindfulness Centre. His new book called Managing Depression with Mindfulness for Dummies will be released early in 2015, published by Wiley & Sons.
He spent five years living and working at the Nan Hua Buddhist monastery in South Africa where he studied Buddhist philosophy and mindfulness meditation with various teachers both form the Chinese Zen as well as the Tibetan Buddhist traditions. In 1999, he also had the wonderful opportunity of having personally met His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the blessing of which continues to inspire him up until today.
Robert worked in private practice in Windsor (next to Windsor Castle, Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Residence), Berkshire before journeying out on a personal retreat to the Isle of Skye in Scotland where he spent 6 months on a personal meditation healing retreat.
He now works part-time within the mental health field for the NHS (UK’s free government National Health Service) where he teaches mindfulness to both NHS healthcare staff as well as patients living in a psychiatric hospital recovering from severe mental health illness. Recognising that those who support others need to be supported themselves Robert founded the Mindful SPACE Programme for Staff Wellbeing offered to all 5000 NHS healthcare staff across the county of Dorset. In 2013 he was nominated for the NHS Oscars and was awarded the finalist price of the Chief Executive’s Award for Innovation.
He now teaches the 8-Week MBSR Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course in Bournemouth, Dorset ,UK and has an avid interest in the neuroscience of mindfulness and ways in which this deeply spiritual tradition can be introduced to people in a secular and psychological non-spiritual way.
