Tamera Swan Mason has been involved with metaphysics for some time. She originally discovered the Daily Word printed by Unity School of Christianity and was fascinated with its daily inspiration, and joined the local Unity Center. She began studying with Unity in her local Center. At that time Unity also had a distance learning program. Her goal was to become a licensed Unity Teacher. Unfortunately, Unity changed its program, and one could no longer acquire credits for classes taught in their local Center. The distance learning program was discontinued, and one had to go out to Unity Village in Lee Summit, Missouri, to study. This was not possible for Tamera, a mother of three children. Apparently, she had progressed enough and was asked by the minister at that time, Rev. Robert Marshall, to be a platform assistant and perform the meditation.
As a result, she held various leadership positions in the Center, including board president for many years. The average length of time for a Unity Minister in this Center was approximately two ½ years. During the time between each minister (there were five ministers), Tamera was voted to the board again and again and found herself in charge of the Center. Aside from having to find speakers for Sunday services, she conducted the Sunday Service when a speaker was not available. She planned educational overnight retreats, and a trip to Unity Village, as well as trips to other Unity.
Centers within the Baltimore-Washington corridor. She invited teachers from Unity Village to conduct weekend retreats at the Center and maintained the Center’s office on a daily basis. She facilitated weddings and funerals. She has a strong belief in meditation and conducted an hour of meditation on Wednesday night. One of her successful events was an old-fashioned Afternoon Tea where ladies had to wear hats. This brought many women out for an enjoyable event. A book signing and reception was also an event she planned that brought individuals from other churches in the Baltimore and surrounding areas to promote their work and meet one another.
As a published author, she talks about her days at Unity in an article entitled “One Step at a Time “in a book entitled The Power of God published by the Professional Woman Network. She has authored other articles published by the Professional Woman Network that highlight her faith in God and our place in the universe.
After so many years in Unity, she felt she needed a break. But she did not give up her love for New Thought. For the next 3-4 years, she continued to sharpen her skills and was able to utilize space in various churches in the area to conduct her own group that she calls The Light that Surrounds You. Surprisingly, the churches, Lutheran, Methodist, and Universal Unitarian, were all very amenable. Most of the meetings were during the day, but in one church we could only meet at night. Tamera stated, “We did not stay there very long, as they turned off the heat at 3:00 pm.
Sincerely interested in New Thought, she continued to study and in 2007 she received a Practitioner Diploma and became an Ordained Metaphysical Minister. She received a master’s degree in 2021 and a Doctorate in Metaphysical Science in 2022, all from the University of Metaphysics.
After Covid, Tamera began teaching classes on Zoom on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. For more information about her classes and to get information about her articles, email her at metamorphosis10@verizon.net.
